The following is provided by Jerry Zimmermann, President, The Springs At Stone Oak HOA:

There is a product that I have used on my roof to remove black algae called Spray and Forget.  They have an excellent web site  www.sprayandforget.com that instructs  homeowners on how to remove this eye sore, which is growing more and more as time passes.  This black algae has begun to appear on the north side of some houses in the Springs and may be attributable to a specific kind of roof tile used by our builders.  The algae will not go away and the longer it is left on the roof the worse it will get.  Once sprayed it takes about 6 months to see results.  I sprayed mine 2 times and used about 1/2 of a gallon totally and have been very pleased with the results.  I have found the product at Acme Hardware and runs around $50 per gallon.  The only equipment required is a garden sprayer, which cost around $20 to purchase.  However, I would caution homeowners to not get on the roof if they don't feel comfortable doing so.

Driving around and looking at the roof slopes on the north sides will confirm that this is becoming an eyesore in the community.

Other local area stores offering Spray and Forget are listed at http://www.sprayandforget.com/storelocator.asp .

I recommend this product to anyone selling their house in the community that has the black algae problem.  Not taking care of the problemcan can deter potential buyers.
